As someone that just graduated from my post-secondary institution this summer, when asked the question “what has your experience at the post-secondary institution taught you”, I had to reflect on a lot of things that happened in the past year.
I thought back to the moment when I first began my journey at the institution. I was confused, terrified and without any friends at the school, and needless to say that I was clueless about what I was doing.
And then, I thought back to the moment when I graduated from the very institution that I was so scared of being, and I realized the past few years I have probably learned more things than I ever have in high school.
I learned how to discipline myself to reach my goals, I learned how to take the first initiative when making friends, and I also learned how to deal with myself and my thoughts when the pandemic hit in my last year.
There were many lessons along the way, but I think resilience was definitely the most valuable. Conflicts are inevitable in our lives, and facing these conflicts takes courage, as well as experience.
Ironically, the more conflicts we run into, the more skilled we are at solving these very conflicts.
And so, I think that while attending post-secondary institutions, it is important to keep an open mind.
Don’t be afraid to try out new things, don’t be scared when running into problems.
In the end, you will come out a better version of yourself that your past self would be very proud of before you knew it.
